In 2013 we recorded 3,531 USAs, EPAs and PCT applications relating to ink jet technology, equivalent to 294 per month. This was 118 more than in 2012, a 3.4% increase. Although the number of patents relating to desk-top technology is falling, this is currently balanced by the increase in technology for commercial and industrial applications.

For the fifth year in a row Seiko Epson was clearly the most prolific publisher of patent applications, with almost an identical number to that of 2012. In fact the top 5 were in the same positions as last year. Océ’s leap from 19th to 10th place was the biggest riser within the top 20, with a 70% increase in patents. The biggest fall was Silverbrook/Zamtec, dropping from 9th to 15th place with a 67% drop in patent applications.

The biggest growth was from Kyocera, who filed 37 applications in 2013 compared to just 12 in 2012. The largest fall was from Lexmark/Funai Electric dropping from 38 to 10 patent applications, not surprising as the Lexmark facility has now closed.

In the top 10 ink jet ink patent scores table, Fujifilm again lead with 102; that is 45% of their patent applications are ink related. In second place is Seiko Epson again with 61 patent applications, but just 11% of their total.

There is a full league table of all patent applications, and a breakdown of ink patents in the analysis tab of the final patent database for 2013, available to subscribers.
